Ava DuVernay born August 24 72, at Long Beach in CA. Her aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for the arts and her creative side. She worked as an evening nurse in order to give her aunt the time she needed throughout the day for the love of art, literature, and theatre. DuVernay became enamored with the film of 1961 West Side Story after her aunt showed her to DuVernay. DuVernay recognized that art is an effective way to spread activism. DuVernay was raised by a mother who was socially conscious and showed her how to make use of art as a method to express herself. Although DuVernay lived within Compton with her family, she spent every summer living in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. DuVernay's dad recalled the civil rights marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. The summers DuVernay spent there inspired her later to make a film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay received her high school diploma at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began producing television news as a student. DuVernay began her career as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was told to examine the garbage from a home belonging to a jury member. DuVernay was dissatisfied with her journalism tasks and decided to move into the field of public relations. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a junior publicist immediately after graduation. She was promoted to the position and set up her own public relations company called The DuVernay Agency in 1999.
